The most interesting stage of all! Today, we will prepare to harvest our compost.
We make compost /humus (not soil) out of our food waste and other carbon rich materials we add to it.
In this video, we reviewed the Bokashi Pinoy method to review what we are trying to achieve, celebrate what we have achieved so far and then prepare for the next action to get to where we want to be.
It is important to note, that some materials decompose faster than the others. Review Day 15 Carbon to Nitrogen Ratio .
Two weeks after you bury your Bokashied food waste, some of it will already be ready to use but some of it will need more time in stage 3.
So, you have 5 options
Option 1 - Age it! Let it stay in Stage 3 for another 1-3 weeks! Let Nature take its course!
Option 2- Transfer it to your planters, then add 4-inch layer of good potting mix on top (for germinating seeds and transplanting seeds. When the seeds/seedlings have matured enough, the compost is just about right as well.
Option 3- Sift your compost. Use the sifted compost and then return the bigger particles back to your stage 3 pile/bin
Option 4 - Top Dressing, just add a few inches of your compost on existing plants / trees.
To those who do not have a garden or do not have a garden yet now or in the near future..
Remember: just putting a few inches of compost on top of the soil with existing plants /trees/vegetation helps to cool the climate
yes top dressing ang tawag jan... and your question brings us back to our end in mind...
Option 5 - Create your own potting mix of 1 part soil, 1 part Bokashi compost and 1 part extender (either coco peat/raw rice hull / sawdust / sand)
You may also add epowdered egg shells to address the acidity of your compost:
