Day 24 of 30 - MRF, Share Waste and Soil Makers

Updated: Jun 8, 2020

Do you want to know where you can bring your Bokashi Pre-compost if you do not have a yard or a space to bury it to? Or do you also want to make soil / compost for personal use or for use in your community garden? Do you want to design a livelihood program with compost making at its core?

Here are several options

Option 1: Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) in each Barangay

Under the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act- each barangay is mandated by the government to have a Material Recovery Facility (MRF).

In Barangay Ugong, Valenzuela - their Material Recovery Facility and Soil Site is equipped with a Bio Reactor and a Bokzbox (a passive composting method which does not require energy).

The Bokzbox is intended for those who do not have gardens/ yards to bury their Bokashi Pre-compost. So, if you are a resident of Barangay Ugong, Valenzuela, you may bring your Bokashi Pre-compost to their MRF and put it in the Bokzbox.

For other biodegradable waste, eg those coming from the market and other households who are not using the Bokashi Pinoy method - you may have it processed via the Bioreactor.

This is an example of a Barangay level Solid Waste Management Plan in Action which is also under the Barangay Livelihood Training Office of Barangay Ugong, Valenzuela led by Kagawad Annie Salvador Baluyot. Bokashi is part of their holistic Solid Waste Management Plan - which includes training the barangay residents in several forefronts

1. managing kitchen waste at the household level - Bokashi Pinoy method

2. managing all other biodegradable wastes at the barangay level - via Bioreactor

This is on top of their initiatives, which includes Mushroom Cultivation, Monthly River Clean up and Beautification of Tullahan River and Free Weekend Health Clinics and other services.

The Barangay Solid Waste Management Council also wanted to do more than composting so they are planning to develop an Urban Farm under their CSG or Community Support Group and also to sell their compost at a low price for urban farmers.

Option 2: Sign-up to MakeSoil as a Soil Supporter or Soil Maker

Sign up either as a Soil Maker (if you want to accept Bokashi Pre-compost or as a Soil Supporter (if you want to donate Bokashi Pre-Compost)

The first Soil Maker Site in the Philippines is at Tahanan Outreach Projects & Services in Santa Ana, Manila - watch the video for a preview of the Soil Maker Site

Option 3: Download the ShareWaste App

Sign up either as a Host (if you want to accept Bokashi Pre-compost) or as a Donor (if you want to donate Bokashi Pre-compost)

Meanwhile, let us continue with our Bokashi Pinoy Stage 2 steps
